Initiating Communities of Practice -- A Case Study of Contagious Enthusiasm

Breakout Session 10

Thursday, May 1   |    2:45 pm

Presenter:
Paige Kane, director, knowledge management/CoPs, Wyeth Biotech

The Biotech Operating Unit of Wyeth became interested in communities of practice to help connect seven Biotech sites spread across multiple countries. The pilot program included seven CoPs and a formal evaluation of how the CoPs utilized the APQC methodology.

The initial launch of Biotech's CoPs created such enthusiasm that, within one year, corporate leadership advocated for CoPs to become an operational philosophy. Communities that span all operating units are underway. Items to be discussed in this session include:

  • community evolution and APQC methodology utilization,
  • lessons learned,
  • survey data results,
  • communication plans,
  • programmatic support provided to CoPs,
  • success stories, and
  • next steps.

Very good presentation of getting started,

Hi Paige- this was absolutely one of my favorite presentations because you did such a great job of blending theory with pragmatic application...and your passion for CoPs shined through. It sounds like your work with APQC produced an effective process for initiating enterprise CoPs. I would be very interested to learn more about your 2 and 3 days sessions that you mention above!

Paige, I concur with Joe and John. Your presentation and case study were excellent. I also appreciated getting into the "nuts and bolts" of enabling communities of practice. I have a pretty mundane question in comparison: What platform or software do you use for your eRooms? Are they more like chat rooms or bulletin-board forums?

Paige Kane on May 13, 2008 3:16 PM

Hi Maxwell- our eRooms are based on Documentum technology (or else it is owned by Documentum, not exactly sre) The eRooms are acutally more of a project collaboration area for sharing documemnts etc but it also has discussion forums. Folks here haven't used the discussion forums very much but it may be due to the fact there is a multi layer log on. We have various security levels on the eRooms as well so not everyone can post or view all folders. That works well for work in progress.

John- I'd be delighted to speak to you more about our courses and workshops if you would like to drop me an email at Kanep2@wyeth.com and we can set up a time..

Regards,
Paige
