Learning and Knowledge Meets Web 2.0

Breakout Session 1

Thursday, May 1   |    11:00 am

Presenter:
Bryant Clevenger, global knowledge strategy leader for Global Business Services, and Gordon Lee, global knowledge sharing leader for Global Business Services, IBM

Social software driving sites like Google, Flickr, YouTube, and Facebook are fundamentally changing the way people collaborate. However, despite the tremendous dropIcon.pngpopular appeal of social networking tools, companies will not reap the full benefits of Web 2.0 simply by deploying these technologies within their corporate firewalls. Realizing the promise of social software requires accommodation of the differences between a mass consumer population and a limited employee base. To revolutionize the way in which knowledge sharing occurs across its 100,000-person consulting organization, IBM is augmenting existing KM initiatives with game-changing innovations from its research division and introducing new initiatives in community building.

After seeing IBM's presentation last week as part of the APQC Web2.0 Practitioner's Series, it was such a treat to see the live demo. Thanks so much.Carla

I thought this was a pretty good expose of a company using new technology in a rather fearless manner. I can only admire as I come from a much more risk-focused environment so we will watch closely and then when the pressure mounts follow. Learning what is working here is key but results seem not to be the focus yet (of the presentation at least). One impressive result is the uptake they described of user-generated tagging. Wisdom of crowds appears to be a powerful tool in the ability to find...wonder if it works tho????

Another question is their creative use of ONA in expertise finder. Does seeing the connections of the people found in a search add value?

I was among several other big management consulting firms taking copius notes.
